Raven
Somerset Hotel was recently panned in this forum for poor service. Does the Somerset Lakepoint have similar problems? I assume that it is guest friendly. Its location does seem nice - tucked away off Sukumvit, but reasonably close to the nightspots.
dsab
Hi, Somerset Lakepoint has nothing to do with somerset Hotel. Somerset Lakepoint belongs to the Ascott-Group, which is a singapore based Serviced-Apartment Company. It offers a great service, very pleasant staff, is safe, and has very nice apartments. It only opened a year ago. A favourite place of quite some people that visited me recently. They even offer you a TUK-TUK, which brings you to Asoke Station, whenever you are too lazy to walk. For quotations mail them. That way you get a much better quote then on their website. The italian restaurant (downstairs in tower and Cafe Kuppa to the left are a plus. Very nice indeed. Cheers, DSAB

rickfarang
They guy who collects ID cards at the podium is there for your own protection. My Thai wife is much younger than I am (52 year old Farang). She and I have stayed at the Manhattan more than a dozen times in the last two years. We have also had her teen-age friends and sisters visit us in the hotel, sometimes staying overnight, coming to the room someties escorted and by just walking in through the door and going up the elevator. They have never had any problems and, as far as I know, never had to show their ID cards. I think they go out of their way at the Manhattan to make the guests and their guests feel comfortable. Once (more than two years ago for those who know my wife and me), when a lady came to visit me at about 02:30 (after she got off work), the fellow in the lobby asked her where she was going. She said "To the the American in room 8XX". And that was all there was to it. The Manhattan is located near Therme and Clinton, but if you approach it from the high-numbered Sois, the worst thing you'll have to take your girlfriend past is Robinson's, or maybe that guy who incessantly tries to hands leaflett for the Indian restaurant to everybody who passes by. But I digress terribly. Planteholiday.com and others can book the Manhattan for you for under 900 Baht, double occupancy, including two breakfasts. For my baht, the Manhatan is the best deal around, and their staff is consistently more alert, polite, and helpful than any other I've stayed at in this class (under 3,000 baht/night).
