There were reports back in the 1980s or 1990s (as I recall) of internal-consumption military magazines in Beijing containing articles that started with the premise that China and the US would fight a serious hot shooting war sometime in the 2025-2050 timeframe, and working the problem of "what do we need to be doing NOW to get ready to fight and win that war?".
