THE days of passengers being able to carry luggage on to planes for free could be numbered with the Flight Attendants Association of Australia pushing for an overhaul of current baggage arrangements by airlines.

Cabin crew claim they are regularly being injured and running out of space in the aircraft, as passengers go to great lengths to avoid the hassle and expense of checking in their bags.

Pretty simple - make the cheap bastards stow their own hand luggage as they have to on Air Asia flights, and let the other passengers stare daggers at their fellow cheapskates as they struggle to get 20KG of luggage into a space designed for 10KG at most.

have to agree.

it pisses me off when i see passengers bring on 'hand luggage' which is far larger then my hold baggage.

my hand luggage on whatever time in hours of flight easily fits beneath the seat as instructed.

how much do you really need on a flight?,all i need is a book

Equal time for the Devil's Advocate.

I have obstructive sleep apnea and fairly severe chronic asthma. I carry my CPAP, my nebulizer compressor and nebulizer, and all of my medications. I also carry a pocket measured-dose inhaler and an Epi-Pen (epinephrine autoinjector). That pretty well fills a standard 22" x 14" x 9" carryon bag.

I also carry a notebook computer, Nikon D80 DSLR camera, a set of Bose noise-cancelling headphones, a CD player, and a CD wallet, plus batteries and chargers for same. That fills a camera/notebook backpack.

The camera/notebook backpack is nowhere near rugged enough to stand airline baggage handler treatment, even before considering the well-documented sticky fingers at TSA and various US airports. So it has to go carryon.

The medical gear HAS to travel with me. Baggage does go astray. BEST case, if it gets lost or delayed, I don't sleep and I miss my scheduled meds. Worst case, I replace everything at destination or I do a hospital ride. ABSOLUTE worst case, the airplane gets to divert someplace unpleasant for an in-flight medical emergency that was 100% preventable if I'd just had my meds with me. (I think that last is what convinced Thai to let me carry my nebulizer compressor as a small purse, while I carried the backpack. I think they figured out that they would not look too good if their 747 had to divert into Afghanistan or Pakistan. I took my chances on them losing or breaking the CPAP. (They didn't.))

I think JAL has a one-bag rule, as they challenged me on the second bag at Suvarnabhumi a few years ago. They now have a note in their computer files that says I travel with certain medical equipment, and it has never been a problem since then.

Years ago in Sillypore you'd go to the airport and see the most amazing things being carried as "Hand Luggage" on flights to India.

India had insanely high import duties on most household electrical devices, to the point if someone was going to Sillypore, a store would subsidise the trip with cash so that the person travelling could bring back household appliances.

I have seen small fridges carried on as "Hand Luggage"

Of course Air India staff had . . . . . .

:)

Hand luggage has got nothing to do with what you need on the flight!

Hand luggage, which may include things you need on the flight, is for things that you don't want to put in your checked luggage such as your laptop, camera equipment, valuables, etc.

I almost always carry two pieces of hand luggage, my laptop bag and my camera bag, neither of which is very big and both of which comply with the airlines regulations.

Of course Specialist's, and any other medication/medical equipment is generally not counted in the 10/15 kg carry on/one bag limit, the same as a woman's "handbag" (which can often be the size of a small elephant). Most, if not all airlines allow laptop and camera gear to be carried on in addition to the carry on allowance as they often are not covered by insurance if they are checked it, and can be worth a bit of cash.

I don't know how many times I've been stuck behind someone on check in arguing about what they can and cannot check in, they generally say ok I'll take it back to the car, and check in the 20 kg per person or whatever then proceed to the gate with all the extra items, and take up all the compartment space. I noticed in Feb this year at Tullamarine staff were measuring and weighing people's hand luggage before they passed security/immigration leaving Melbourne. If over they were sent back.

Like sayjann, all I need is a book, but I carry on my camera gear with the possible exception of a tripod or two, and some of the bulkier stuff. Bodies, lenses, grips, flashes, batteries all carry on. No problem so far.

while i appreciate what you say, what i meant to infer was that my hand luggage does include camera equipment and other small electrical things i don't need to use on the plane.

once my book is taken out and stowed in compartment on the seat in front then my small rucksack is easily stowed away as instructed.

my valuables are in a bum-bag which is never taken off and i don't take a laptop.

ok,i took a laptop once because i was staying in a new hotel which advertised wi-fi and what a waste of time that was.

used my laptop about 9 times in 15 days due to connection failures.

my regular hotel has a computer in the room and the coonection speed is brilliant.
