Ah, I'd never connected the Pogues with the old Irish greeting. I wondered about their name, since I have Pogues in my ancestry way back. It is a Scottish name (same as Polk) and the Pogues in Northern Ireland are Prods, not Croppies.

 

Their original band name was 'Pogue Mahone', pogue mahone being the anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse".
