chilli13
one pty BG kept using this 'chip high?' with all sorts of sentences such as 'mao chip high' etc. & I got the feeling it was sort of funny. however eventually some biergarden BG told me this sentence was very offending while another TG would translate it as BITCH or something. i.e. very RUDE. anyone can come up with an explanation? thanks
Guest
It is a vulgar way of adding emphasis: "mao" = drunk "mao maak" = very drunk "mao chip hai" = fucking drunk off your ass It seems to be used only with negative things. For example "yae chip hai" = "it really fucking sucks". But you'd never hear "dee chip hai" for "really fucking great". It is not an expression that should be used in polite company. CHIP HAI - Damn it! NAO CHIP HAI - Its damn cold. HEW CHIP HAI - I'm damn hungry.

markle
'chip hai' can also be used sarcastically like 'dee chip hai' )like fuck it's good) or on it's own - something bad has happened - chip hai! (oh fuck) another word, same meaning is 'chip peng'
bibblies
They should use it more on Thai subtitles. Thai subtitles are, quite simply, shit. Yesterday I saw 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'. After a while I wondered why my girlfriend wasn't laughing. Then I saw the subtitles. As an example, they'd translate 'Nice tits' as 'Naa rak dii'. What a gyp! They're so demure that they miss everything.
Guest
So...."You're fucking crazy" would be "Khun baa chip hai" ? :: HT
Pharcyde
I agree with the other posters. Chip Hai is the equivalent to "fuckin´" It is considered somewhat rude expression. There are two similar, but softer versions. 1. Chip peng! (peng is rising tone) 2.Chip Pong! (so is pong) I think these are less offensive, but try for yourself. :hubba: Cheers, Pharcyde
