Butchers shops in Thailand

Hi all,

fairly new to posting on this board but would like to congratulate you all on keeping it alive, well, and informative.

Now I dunno if anyone can help me here.

But basically my wife (GTG from Nong Khai) has been living in the UK now for 12 years and dearly wants to return home, either for a number of years or permanently (big difference I know but I will worry about that later). And I have hesitantly agreed if I can find a way of earning a 1/2 decent living.

Unfortunately I am not extremly well off nor am I a very well educated man with degrees under my belt (not stupid or broke either).

Now as I am sure you have already sussed out my dilemma, which is what the hell can I do there? (not a teacher by any accounts).

My background is in the meat industry having had my own shops and after being kicked in the b***ls by BSE (mad cows disease) I joined a multinational grocery wholesaler and progressed through their management programs etc and am now sitting fairly comfortably as an area manager. Now I know that I am fairly / extremely unlikely to find a post similar to what I currently have, so it seems my only options are to set up a shop or 2 in LOS or to find a totally new industry to get my teeth into.

Now I know of a couple of butchers around LOS but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of how successful they have been or maybe you know of anyone personally who has made a good go of it!

Any help or comments you can pass me would be much appreciated - just a shame I cant get at any retirement options for another 20 or so years - or at least a major lottery win (dreaming).

Thanks again! :dunno:

There's a few German and French guys up in Chiang Mai making a living out of selling specialist products like sausages and pates. One of the Germans sells his products to other restaurants and has a little eatery attached to his shop. We also have Northern farm up here which is a butchers / farm shop that supplies superior cuts of meat.

Depending on your financial situation and how much your prepared to risk I would spend time [ at least 6 months] in Thailand making contacts, learning the language etc before risking anything in any business. This is just my opinion.

Butcher,

Man, you were pretty scary in Gangs of New York !

I'll never look at a butcher the same way again. They've always scared me with those bloody knives, but burying a meat cleaver in someone's back over difference of opinion ? Scorsese also delights in showing refrigerated trucks and meat lockers with more than one species on the meat hooks in movies like Goodfellas.

I'm told that its a secure career choice though - not much chance of actually getting the chop.

BB,

I think its only fair to warn you that Gangs of New York is not an easy film to watch. If you've seen any of Scorsese's other films, I think you'll know what I'm talking about. He has several scenes depicting 'Bill the Butcher' carving up various dead animals, and it succeeds in building a sense of dread for the scenes where he turns his skills to two-legged prey.

The butcher in our little country town had a wonderful habit of suddenly appearing from the back room, his apron covered in blood, laughing and sharing a joke with my mother whilst I tried to suppress an urge to run screaming from the shop. Still cant spend more than 3 minutes in a butcher's shop ....
