Any Mac Users? I have a download problem...

Dear All,

I'm running Internet Explorer 5 on Mac OS 9.1/OS 10 (one year old Power Mac, G4 cube etc.). I was using this machine in my office, connected to the company server, never any problems. I brought the machine home and am now connected to an Ethernet TCP/IP server (Yahoo Japan). I have no problems viewing the internet and playing music/movies, but since I got wired up to the new server, 3 odd things have happened.

1) I cannot download files to disk. When I try to do so, the Download Manager appears, begins to download but cuts off after a few seconds, and the error message 'No such device or address' appears.

2) I can no longer save favorites either to the favorites file or to the toolbar favorites. Well, I can save them but they disappear when I restart.

3) Internet Explorer Help has also vanished. When I try to open it I get the 'No such device or address' error message again.

I suspect that I need simply to alter a setting somewhere because a part of the computer thinks it's still hooked up to the old server (?) but I'm fucked if I know what setting(s) need updating. Any ideas? I rang the local Mac Centre (who are about as much use as a chocolate frying pan :cussing: ) and the disinterested-sounding dude suggested I reinstall the OS 9.1/10 software. I did so, but nothing has changed.

Thankx, guys, for any suggestions in advance.

When you save things the location that you save to will default to the last location you selected, so it could be that you just need to change the location. Try saving something to the Desktop. If that doesn't change anything try to duplicate the problem with Netscape/Mozilla or another application.

Does the problem occur with Chimera, Netscape, Opera or Mozilla.?

Are you using OS 9 or OS X when the problem occurs? If you are not sure, OS 9 chirps pops squeeks, and clicks alot, and if you are using OS X the desktop has a jelly bean look to it.. Try and see if the problem occurs in one or the other or both operating systems. This will require using the startupdisk manager which you can find in

OS 9

apple menu>apple>control panels>start up disk

OS X

dock>system preferences>startup disk

Adikgede,

Thanks for the reply :) . The failure to download occurs with both Mac OS 9.1 and OS X (I've both installed, have started up in each one respectively, and still cannot download links or images) whatever location I specify, including saving to desktop. It begins to download and then, after about 5 seconds, a triangular yellow sign with an exclamation mark and the message "Error" appear in the download manager window.

Can't save Favorites either (they vanish when I restart), nor open "Internet Explorer Help" (Error message reads "No such device or address"). None of these problems existed before I switched to the Ethernet server.

I reinstalled both the OS 9.1 and OS 10 and swithched from one to the other in the Start-Up Disk changer, but no joy, same same.

Any other suggestions? It's a wierd one, and seriously curtailing my enjoyment of downloaded pornography and stolen music. :(:cussing::banghead:

Have you tried other browsers also?

If there is a link or image on a web page can you drag it to the desktop?

If your version of OS X comes with the developer tools package (Other wise you have to down load it which won't work) install it and see what kind of errors you get using wget. wget is a console app so you will have open a terminal and type wget plus some url.

Hi, my 2 bahts worth. Reinstall IE.

As Adikgede says try another browser, Mozilla for me or the new Safari from Apple can be got via Software update if you're running 10.2 or up.

If software update doesn't work, then it's the Mac? if it does then it's IE?

If you're not running 10.2 (Jaguar) you should consider it, 150 improvements/new features since 10.1x

Coss,

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered IE 7.1 on disk (from the US, $30, seeing as I can't download the fucker free... :cussing: :: ) and will install that when it arrives.

It's the "No such device or address" error message that bugs me. What's that all about? And not being able to save Favorites is a real drag.

Oh, yeah, and Adikgede: cheers again, but I can't try out Mozilla or whatever because I can't download them! But yes, I can drag images onto the desktop OK, and they're still there when I restart. I just can't open the bastards (Error message reads 'Couldn't display image because a suitable graphics importer cannot be found'). Itried to install the developer tools disk that came with the OS X bundle, but it says I need some sort of password so that was another non-starter...

You may both have now realised that I am a complete idiot :clown: when it comes to computers and software. But I've never had any trouble before in over 15 years of using Macs.

Hmmph. :(
