There is no alternative and I don't like to cancel this trip.
gobbledonk
jp1, I dont think the health authorities want people to cancel their travel plans, simply ensure that they are vaccinated appropriately. Some of the diehard travellers on the board must feel like pincushions, but thats got to be better than having a doctor tell you that youve got something really nasty. Guest
I thought they said that they had not yet isolated the exact cause and hence could not supply a appropriate vaccine yet. But i could have heard wrong.
Guest
Quite correct. This is NOT the flu. Rather an atypical pnuemonia from an unknown source. So far it has not been determined if it is viral or bacterial, so no vaccine or standard treatment .....yet. It would not appear to be overtly virulent at this stage as infections are sporatic and random....... however these are the types of infections that can mutate..... so everyone should stay VERY aware of this situation. Of course with a face like yours it will probably die at first glance.

That now includes the US and Canada, according to tonite's News. Perhaps those nuts who have been rating about the 'endtimes' have finally got their wish. Redbaron
I'm no fan of needles, but is there a vaccine available? If not does it look like one might be around soon? Does the 'normal' flu vax cover this? (I get this one free at work!)
Guest
Not sure we gain by avoiding those countries, but avoiding confined spaces with too many folks might be wise. Worst is probably aircraft with the recirculated air. (not all planes do this, but most do) As is reported so far, the cases are rather spotty, but it would appear that Hong Kong may have been the start point. The 2 Canadians who died and the 9 more that appear to have it all had been in HK recently. No need for full blown panic yet, but when the WHO puts out these alerts, one needs to stay aware. And yes, this is type of scenario that could progress to something more rampant.

Artiew, We cannot stop doing business and traveling just because an unknown virus has claimed a few lives. There are some isolated cases known, so far. Just read an article, that on yesterdays flight no. SQ 025 (NYC-FRA-SIN), a doctor fell ill on board with the symptoms of this new disease. He, his wife and another doctor participated in some convention in NYC and were on their way back to SIN. The flight was grounded at Frankfurt by German authorities. The doctor, his wife and some other passengers were admitted to the ?Isolation ward? of the Central hospital. Before he left Singapore the doctor came into conatct with one patient who had the symptoms of this new disease. Most passengers of said flight had to wait at the airport for some 8 hours until the health authorities gave them the green light to either leave for home (in Germany) or continue their flight to SIN with another aircraft (original aircraft had to be disinfected). In present days such a virus can travel around the globe with the speed of a jet aircraft. Wherever we stay, we are not 100% safe. What kind of precaution can one take ? maybe sitting at home and not leave the house? That?s too unrealistic and also not possible.

What is special about this virus compared to the most agressive flu, is that deaths have been reported among otherwise healthy people. Health workers have been hit. I don't know about sporadic either..The private hospital which was hit in HaNoi is a small one. Maybe 80 staff there or so? 20 of these got it, 1 dead until now. Several in serious conditions. Its early days so it is difficult to know the charteristics of this virus. I read that specialists have been flown into HaNoi from France. Lets hope more info comes available soon.
