I see from your PM that you were able to find the old thread. The use of HIV self test kits seems to be a touchier subject than WMD?s or the Pope on abortion, so I?m not going to comment on it further other than to say it?s the kind of issue you have to decide on for yourself.

A couple of years ago, I tested myself using Ora-Quick as it had been a couple of years since I was last tested. The test came up positive and of course I was freaked out. One line is negative and 2 lines is postive and there was a faint, but noticable 2nd line. The instructions stated that the 2nd line could be faint, but still indicated a positive test. Tested twice more immediately (once with saliva and once with blood) and both were negative. I went in the next day to a hospital and got tested properly and was negative. That was not a fun 24 hours and after that I threw away the rest of the test kits (I had bought a pack of 5). The literature claims to be 99.98% accurate, but who knows?

Says Runkarna:

There are many guys who have been doing field testing for some time now, but for various reasons they don't post too much about it.

Latency period or not, it gives you a chance to weed out bad ones. Moreover, it's a way of "calling" a positive girl who knows her status, since she often will decline to take the test and walk off, realizing this customer was not to be tricked.

Harsh words maybe, but this is how it works sometimes in real life.

About guys not posting their experiences, I guess it's no wonder since people do get intimitated by the flames. Too bad really, as this inhibits the flow of information. As for me, I am sticking to the subject until I am intellectually convinced otherwise.

I agree with you about the self selection angle. It may be one of the best benefits of the test kits, and you don't even have to do the test. :)

I perfectly understand your position, and I thank you for posting. You took the worst flame I have seen on this board as a reward for your effort to share the information. Please allow me to repost your original message here for those who are interested in test kits:

About two months back there was a thread here where someone mentioned a clinic near Patpong where the 20 minute OraQuick HIV-1/2 self test kits could be purchased.

Well, the directions to the place were a bit confusing to me, so I failed to find it on my first attempt. But I'm a determined SOB, so I enlisted the help of a couple of veteran BKK buddies who really know their way around and we found the place during a run to the 'pong with no problem.

Here's the easy way to find the Surawong Medical Center. Walk out of Pink Panther on PP2 and turn right. Continue down PP2 maybe 100 feet to the first soi then turn right. The clinic is less than 50 feet down this soi on the right hand side. You can't miss it.

As was reported; the test kits go for 500B each or five for 2000B. Against my better judgment (because the expiration date was Feb. 03), I opted for five. (BTW, they also stock Viagra, and Uprima - which I have never seen for sale anywhere else. Couldn't resist trying this stuff, so I purchased one Uprima tablet for 550B - I'll write a separate post on what I thought of it.)

Anyway, these OraQuick tests are really cool. They look somewhat like an oral digital thermometer with a swatch at the end you swipe your gums with. Following this, you stand the thing up in a vial of developing solution and wait 20 - 40 minutes. That's all there is to it.

If you are negative one control line forms in a window, but (god forbid) if you are HIV+ a second line below the control will appear. The reliability of this test according to the included information is extremely high. Even higher accuracy (a gnat's ass from 100 %) can be obtained if a blood sample is used instead of saliva.

I tried one on myself and one on my TGF (both results were negative ). I attempted to test another lady I have repeatedly been with, but she stubbornly refused. This is not surprising; I doubt many bargirls would easily submit to this unusual request.

This is very useful and surprising information, as OraSure claims zero incidents of false positives in their field tests. I assume the false positive you got was with saliva not blood?

It is really important to address the question of what to do in the case of a girl testing positive. Your experience is a wake-up call that it is not a matter to be taken lightly.

I am pretty sure you posted that the test came up as undetermined and then you went for a 'proper' test. That's the problem with do it yourself kits, even if they come up neg do you really trust them enough? Think it's time I went for another test as not had one for the last couple of visits-peter

I read about the prenup test (package STD test) in another thread, but it does not include herpes and some other obvious STDs. Anyone knows if Surawong Medical Center has a herpes test? If so, is it a fast test (e.g., POCKit)?

Here is a new HIV+ report (abridged) from a poster on another board:

Post subject: Condoms- HIV Test Kit

The advice of always using a condom is very good advice. I for one do not like to use condoms as well.

If the only STD you are worried about is HIV one way around it is using a test kit from OraQuick. HIV test. It is kind of expensive 500 Thai baht per test or 5 for 2000 Baht.

I first heard of this test kit on the old Penhball site.

It may be expensive but how much is your life worth?

Last night I took a girl from Martini's and tested her before any action took place. She came up POSITIVE for the Anti HIV antibodies!

Decided it was not in my best interest to have sex with her. Gave her some money and asked her to leave. I was nice about it but as I see it I have to look out for number one.(Me)

I bought the kit at a clinic near Patpong on Suriwong Road. As mentioned a couple years back on Penhball. Coming out from Patpong 2 and Suriwong turn right and walk to the next soi turn right into the soi and about 20 feet into the soi is a clinic called Suriwong Clinic ask the ladies at the counter as you enter for the OraQuick HIV test kit and they will know what you are talking about.

As I see it I'm better off safe than dead!

Ranger:

This post from another board says that the efficacy of the test is the same with either saliva or blood. Originally posted yesterday (abridged):

Guy, a few clarifications:

Oraquik does use blood or saliva. It's no trick found in Mexico. It's right in their company (printed) literature. I know their website says blood, and the FDA has approved it as such but the instructions and insert say both have equal efficacy. I know because I still have two test kits. You can buy them legally overseas. It is no 'black market' thing, but because of them not being approved for release to the general public in the USA. In fact, on the packaging it says "Not for Sale Outside Thailand".

BTW, Oraquik has been ClIA waived, but last I heard they are still not going to release it to the general public. Totally stupid IMHO as it's as easy to use as a pregnancy test.

Sabio -

Thank you for your post here and in the thread I started in health. Do you have a concise collection of the information you have collected?

Especially, where to purchase these tests. (Yes, I got the info about the place off Patpong)

BTW, for those of you who do not want to use these tests, don't.

I AM NOT ADVOCATING UNSAFE SEX. USE A CONDOM ALWAYS!

The fact is that condoms do break and slip off, this is why condoms are not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy, or HIV transmission.

The addition of these tests into the battle against the spread of HIV is just one of a number of things responsible people should be doing.

These tests will and have prevented HIV transmission and save lives!

Preventing the transmission of the disease is much less expensive than providing costly AIDS drugs afterwards. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

ALSO, another effective rapid test, used in many of the worlds hospitals, WHICH DETECTS HIV 1/2 AND 0 is the Abbottt Laboratories Determine test
