2+ Years Overstay

Recommended Posts

I met a guy that has a 2+ years overstay and wants to sort it out very soon, I looked in his passport and could not believe it,

Interesting if he can get away with only paying the 20,000 Baht maximum overstay charge and not get thrown in the slammer as well with the current political situation here in LOS,

I will update what happens and what course of action he decides on when he takes the plunge and let everyone know the results,

So what would you do in this situation any bright or good ideas !! :dunno:

I don't have any bright ideas for this situation (other than perhaps contact his "home" embassy)....but I do remember looking in the overstay registration book at the Don Muang office not long ago -- and noticed a farang with 200+ days overstay. Apparantly he was let go, paid the max. fine & left.

Not a problem.

Either:

a) turn up at the airport with a ticket out and the 20,000 baht fine money, and smile and say sorry a lot when you receive the bollocking at the immigration desk before departure. (Immigration actually don't really give a shit, it's extra money in the coffers. If you get banged up, you only pay half the fine, plus the costs of processing you through the system more than eats that away. If you turn yourself in, the country gets an extra 20,000 baht in the coffers for the price of 5 minutes time of an immigration officer, then you're gone.)

or

B) get it 'fixed' via a 'visa agent'. (20,000 + a 'service fee' + new visa fee)

a) is legal, B) isn't. End result is basically the same.

i know people with more than ten years. and no problem, 20 000 naht is the maximum fine. visa overstay is not a criminal offence.

very often immigration is even very reluctant to arrest overstayers without money as they will have already enough problems with the overcrowded IDC.

So what are the potential downsides to overstaying a few years for non-workers? It sounds cheaper and simpler than visa runs. Essentially, you just do nothing and pay nothing until you want to leave where you pay a 20000 exit fee. Sounds too good to be true.

The down side is if you get caught in the country with the expired visa, then it is much more trouble than its worth, so far though no one I have talked to or met has given me one example of someone getting arrested for long overstays while leaving the country at an airport or border exit. a few have been arrested at the immigration trying to fix the visa overstay what I have heard is they just got fined, processed and escorted out of the country with a free ride to the airport and express check in :)
