All the mentioned UAL flights are ANA code shares. ANA aircrafts do not fly out of Seattle (unfortunately) so they're not an option for the best fares and routing.

 

Occasionally, the best fares--presumably when 875 or 876 are already full--are offered by UAL with a routing on ANA aircrafts via LAX or SFO. But from SEA, it's not an attractive deal at all.

$100 an hour? I wish! :-) Actually, each US airline has its own interpretation of the rule. Compensations details are not not federally mandated anymore (since deregulation).

 

In the case of United, they're (by their own printed interpretation of the rules) bound to re-route you for the next leg of your journey if the delay exceeds 2 hours. Their rules don't mention cash compensation so it's up to them. If they can't re-route you, they should compensate you, but the form or amount is up to them.

 

Of course, the rule applies only if the delay is entirely their fault, so that exclude weather.
