gawguy
Hi Boys (and...well, do any ladies read the Tech Forum?) and Girls, I came across this post in a Mozilla forum while looking for something else. It was followed by a bunch of responses from people who had made the changes and how happy they were. I could not find all of the settings that they suggested changing. So I changed the ones I could. Not sure if I'm seeing an improvement, but for my fellow nerds who like to pick at the heart of programs, I give you their suggestions as a matter of interest. GG --------- I found this info to speed up Firefox (which I use) and it works a great. My Firefox is so quick now. If you are using it, follow these instructions: First of all type "about:config" in your FireFox address bar. The settings you're looking for are: 1.) network.http.pipelining Change "false" to "true" 2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest Change "false" to "true" 3.) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Set to a high number, like 32. 4.) network.http.proxy.pipelining Change "false" to "true" 5.) nglayout.ititialpaint.delay Set to 0 You will now have a kick ass firefox!!! Guest
me neither, so I just ignored them. If some guru knows the answer, should we add them to the list? I am thinking about the #5 line in particular ...... if the default is higher.
BaronTT
Did the thread say that these tweaks also applied to Mozilla? Do you know if this is dependent on type of connection.. dial-up vs broadband? I'll probably test these in my Mozilla SW in the next couple of days. gawguy
Don't think Mozilla was mentioned, nor the type of connection. Have a look: http://www.nettalk.us/about4703-0.html BTW - I made the changes and I use dialup. Seems to have speeded up the time it takes to display a screen. I really just wanted the tweekers to have a look, and it seems they enjoyed themselves. GG

I went ahead and added the line you are talking about: nglayout.ititialpaint.delay I did it by right clicking on the words "preference name" and choosing new string. Now, it IS definitely faster! BTW, before I made the change I saved the page as about config old.xul just to back it up Real nerd stuff, huh? GG
mongatu
Thanks for the tip. I made the changes (and added the missing string) and I do seem to notice pages load a bit quicker on my dial up connection which is GREAT. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. Btw, just started using FF a few weeks ago and am quickly growing to like it a lot.
gomez
Just downloaded firefox tonight. And getting used to it. Made the alterations above. Though haven't really used it enough to know if I have speeded things up much. Perhaps I should have waited, but what the hell. Wondering if anyone tried to alter No 2 the same way No 5 was created and what was the result? PS: Like the look of it so far. Visited my websites, which I only had tested in IE and Netscape, and everything was fine. A relief. The only thing I hate, which I just noticed now, is the cursor doesn't blink. Suppose I'll have to get used to it.
gomez
Also wonder if anyone is using thunderbird 0.8 and what you think of it. Surprisingly, I didn't find all that much in google, a lot of the same thing, lists of features, then information on older versions. I have Outlook, it's not a real problem, but the spam feature on t-bird sounds good.
