Crime threatens stability in Norway..

What used to me a peaceful country is threatened seriously by crime. Well planned bank robberies occur more and more. With guns and mafia from eastern europe. Something has got to change.. Some of these robbers even have been let out of custody and are free to do their next robbery! A gang who killed a cop in a robbery had several members awaiting sentence from a previous robbery.

The policy here is not in favour of victims, a robbery means a couple of years in prison and then out. The soft line policy does not realize that the reason to lock criminals up, is to protect society.

Yesterday 2 of the most valuable painting in Norway were stolen, if the guys are caught it means a small sentence and out again.

Any potential criminals on this forum, work is good in Norway!

Its easy to find the bandits later though, they all go to Pattaya to whore.

Norways a small country, population wise; yet you take a large number of "refugees" and guest workers. What do you expect...

Chatting to two Norwegian sailors in Ko Samui last year, they said that Oslo was awash with Somalians and eastern Europeans causing problems.

I am sure the robbers behind the theft of the scream painting will be Russian Mafia people.

Its up to you and your country men to do something about it CBK,alas I think its too late for the UK. It is now a criminal offence to criticise a religion, namely Islam in a discriminatory manner......

How long before you cannot call a christmas tree in Oslo, a christmas tree? Here its holiday tree!

Met a couple of girls on my last trip who were involved with Finnish bikers. Apparently criminal. Seems that it's a thing for perps to do the dirty in their home country and knob off to Pattaya to let the dust settle for a while. And just like perps the world over they can't help brag about it.

Does Norway have a big drug problem or is it violent crime?

I think there is several problems adding up.

Norway has gotten a huge drug problem, because of very restrictive policy towards all drugs. There is a zero tolerence, they treat smuggling mariuhana and cannabis as they treat heroin - same punishments. The result is high penalties for light drugs, low for hard ones compared to other countries. So its difficult to get light drugs, easy to get hard ones and all this gets mixed into a highly criminal environment. Difficult to control for police, a lot of hard drug addicts OD'ing. Among the highest in Europe compared to population.

The rewards are huge for smugglers. Apart from drugs its tobacco, alcohol which is insanely priced here. The mafia in the US got started when they could get huge profits on illegal alcohol, its the same stuff happening here.

There has been a too happy-easy going attitude vs. asylum seekers and criminal immigrants. Asylum seekers are let out free to wander around anywhere while their cases are being treated. Many of those have thrown away any ID they have before seeking asylum, and are fake asylum seekers.

I might sound racist pointing it out, but STH has a good point. I have felt criminal activity from some of these myself, I am not so tolerant any more..

The dilemma which some might point out, is that I have been involved in a long fight to get my family here also. But I am a citizen with a living, do not have any criminal record and my wife also has a spotless record which is easy to check out. One of the reasons I had to wait over 1 year to get a visa for my wife, is that bloody criminals flood over the border every 3 months to go on raids here and it has to be a priority to throw these low lifes out.

I believe the painting "Skrik" or "Scream" robbery got a fairly extensive covery in foreign media. Its just one of several lately, the most successful was a robbery in Stavanger where they got away with huge sums of cash in a military commando raid like operation. Biggest robbery in Norway ever.

Didn't realise things were so bad. Always had perhaps rather a rosy misguided view of Norway as being quite a bucolic environment full of rosy cheeked locals bidding good day to each other as they ski down the street.

Saw the thing about The Scream. Perfect example of criminals taking advantage of lax security. Sad that we have to take extreme measures to protect property especially for an item so well known.

I think the UK's gotten pretty crummy and noticably so in the last 15 years. Every big city has drugs and violence. The drinking culture is renowned. Most of the bigger cities will also have organised crime in some shape or form, whether it be a loose coalition of criminals or more insidious wider reaching gangs involved in importation of drugs. The amount of petty crime is unreal. Don't think it's a race/asylum thing meself. I think the media highlight isolated incidents involving asylum seekers and the like. The latest bugbear are gypsies. All the papers are on about how much gypsies take the piss.

For petty crime you have to really be on your guard which is annoying. Two examples, both involving cars. Had a wheel, which was bolted onto the outside, stolen from a 4x4 whilst I was down at my parents house picking up a bed. I left the car in a pleasant residential road, outside a house for no more than 20 mins (the time it takes to go inside, take a bed apart and carry it downstairs). Came out and wheel gone. Must have been carrying a large wrench to get that off. That was last summer. This year only a few weeks ago had another spare wheel stolen. This time it was actually in the boot of the car in the spare wheel well. I'd gone out shopping and neglected to lock the hatchback door. Two days later discovered the wheel gone when I just happened to check. Again it would have been stolen from a nice, residential area. So some lucky opportunist thief that was. Just goes to show that people go around checking hatchbacks!

Personally I don't think that the police have sufficient resources to deal with such matters and the courts, when criminals are found, can be rather lacking. Perhaps there should be a specialist unit of the police set up to deal with minor petty crimes. Perhaps staffed by almost retired officers who don't mind winding down and not dealing with more interesting work. I also think that European governments that are part of the EU are rather hampered by the policy makers who often seem out of touch with reality.

Was reading something about there being two ways of viewing governments. They are either there to preserve the rights of individuals within society (as in a democracy) or they are there to enforce the will of the government and infringe whatever rights the citizens may have. It's a fine line, balancing personal freedom and yet cracking down on criminals. Tough call.
