Student locked in brothel, forced to have sex, court told

By Leonie Lamont

September 21, 2004

She thought she was coming to Australia to work in a restaurant.

But within 24 hours of arrival, the 20-year-old Thai university student was taken to a brothel, allegedly physically threatened, locked up, and forced to have sex.

In the Downing Local Court, two women - brothel owners Ngoc Lan Tran and Sally Cui Mian Xu - are facing a committal hearing on Commonwealth charges of sexual servitude and slavery, which attract a jail term of up to 25 years. It is the second such case in NSW.

The student, whose name has been suppressed, said she was accompanied from Thailand by a woman who took her to Tran's house in Surry Hills. Her passport and airline ticket were taken, and she saw Tran hand over a "stack" of money - $200,000 - to the woman. The next day Tran allegedly loaded the girl and her luggage into her Mercedes and took her to a brothel in Annandale.

The upstairs room was dimly lit with a red light, a double bed, a massage table and en suite. With the visual aid of a plastic penis, she was instructed on how to give oral sex. There were bars on the windows and locked doors. Within five days she was threatening to kill herself. She was taken to the casino where she was allegedly handed into the service of another brothel owner, Sally Cui Mian Xu. She was told she could not go home until she'd paid her "tax".

When not at work she slept at a house with 14 other girls, the doors and windows secured. She said she was given $20 by Xu to pay for her food. Two weeks after arriving in Australia, she used a phone when the brothel's reception was untended, and called 000. Police arrived soon after.

Bruce Stratton, QC, for Tran, asked the student why in phone calls to her parents she had not told them what had happened. She said they would have been disappointed, as neither had wanted her to travel to Australia.

She denied that she had told Tran she had been a "working girl", and that she had wanted to move brothels because Tran's was not busy enough. Mr Stratton suggested she had not been locked in the brothel, and that Tran drove her to Surry Hills each night, and the two had gone shopping at Paddy's Markets where she had bought herself an expensive camera phone. The student denied it.

The hearing continues.

Hi,

a friend of TGF was on her way to Australia some years ago. First they fixed so she got a no on her visa application. Instead they the same day fixed an approved visa in an other person's passport and wanted her to travel on that instead and afterwards sending the passport back! She returned to her hometown to pack her things, lucklily for her I stopped it by pointing out the risk to stay in a foreign country illegaly.

She's a mamasan in England now.........

Hello,

Every time I hear such story, I want to pull my (already sparce) hair out. People still beleive such stories as working in restuarants only. The worst is, it is the Thais who lie to other Thais luring women into prostitution!!! I have a headache!!! :doah: Another case just happened in Canada a few months ago, and who knows how many never have a chance to get out?

And I read every other month articles warning Thai women about this type of dangers, don't anyone listen? :cussing:

An intersting point here is...In a few Bay area cases, Russian girls all made the same claims. All requested to stay here, as they feared relatiation in Russia. Oddly enough, severel had been arrested for prostitution before, and a few have been busted since. A few within a week at another location in SFO. Hence the story of being threatened and sold/traded was obviously a farce. My guess is, many of these girls know or at least have an idea of this happening to them when they sign up. One girl I know in BKK worked Nana. Went to Switzerland to work "Karaoke." I and another board member here told her it was more than that. Her answer was so what, I do it here for a lot less...

Another girl I know, worked at a MP, said about the same, I asked what she would do if caught, and she had the story all ready to go, "...just send me home, no problem..." Many of the Korean girls here who work in the MPs and escort services enter on a fixed Student visa, and are free to come and go, and make a hell of a lot of money. Many move around the country at different times of the year, and seem to enjoy the life. I know a few quite well.

No doubt some of the stories are true, but it seems too convienient to play the innocent victim when caught. My feeling is most of the truely trafficed women work in places White/non Asians will never see, guarded by organized crime types. Doubt the 2 Asian women caught were working this operation alone. MY guess is, if they were, then the girls knew what they were doing when hired...
