SiamIAm
The 6.3 aftershock today was not big enough to create another tidal wave. Apparently you would need a 7.5 or larger accompanied by ground movement under the sea. Also it’s reported that the last active volcano in India erupted. Updated as of Fri Dec 31 09:07:36 UTC 2004. elef
Hi, remember that earthquakes are measured with a logarithmic scale so "9" is 32 times stronger than "8" and "7" is 32 times less than "8"! So moving from "7" to "9" is 32 x 32 = 1024 times stronger. elef
Guest
SiamIAm, you paint an interesting picture but if you want to look at a really interesting picture, look at all seismic activity 5.5 and greater. Were a lot of activity is in Alaska, some in California and a little bit in Japan. That whole area is part of the same picture you posted. I would say there is a possibility of more activity in areas we would least expect - such as Alaska or California.
Redbaron
Those figures above, are they 'normal'? I imagine there would always be some kind of activity going on.

Log 100 = 2, log 1000 = 3, log 1,000,000,000 = 9, log 100,000,000= 8 Same for decibels: 100 db = 10x 90 db (100 db has 10X the power of 90 db, 100 X the power of 70 db) You gotta get out of your base 2 world. Remember, there are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don't

elef
Hi KK, you're half way correct but not more. For each whole number value of Richter Scale increase, the power of an earthquake increases by 10 times and the energy released elevates by 32 times. I think you can figure out the connection! elef
elef
I've translated this from a swedish text from university. Magnitude Intensity(Modified Mercalli scale) Effects Explosive force Number/year 2 till 2.9 II Just sensitive persons feel it. Up to 50 kg TNT 300 000 3 till 3.9 III A few notice, like a heavy lorry passes - 49 000 4 till 4.9 IV - V Most people notice. Hanging things swing. Windows and plates shake. A small atomic bomb (20 kiloton) 6 200 5 till 5.9 II All notice. Humans afraid. Furniture move. Chimneys fall down. - 800 6 till 6.9 VII - IX Some panic. Buildings can be severely damaged. At least like a hydrogen bomb (1 megaton) 120 7 till 7.9 X - XI Spread panic. Few reamaining buildings. Big landslides and cracks. Approximately like 100 hydrogene bombs 18 8 and more XII Complete destruction. Ground waves. Â >60 000 hydrogene bombs <1 An earthquake measuring 12 on the Richter Scale is estimated to have the power to split the earth in half.
