rickfarang
Reasonably-priced medium speed or high speed internet access would make my wife's village a lot more attractive as a place to live (there are no landlines to the village). Does anyone know where to find a web page relating to this new service?
samak
http://english.thuraya.pl/Thailand/vsat.html http://www.ethailand.com/index.php?id=1710 not cheap though!

Nervous_Dog
PM me Rick, we can get it for you. Satellite for both backbone on direct. Trouble is all companies need to pay a large concession fee, and broadband is "TOO CHEAP" so no one wants to invest in expanding their networks except True and iPSTAR. itsmedave
Any chance this new satellite can bring me college football games from the U.S. (he asked with the cutest bit of hopeful naivete)
rickfarang
Thanks guys! :) Did the internet via cell phone thing for a couple of years, nothing but frustration. According to this info, IPStar is available starting at 3,000 baht per month. Now, Thailand seems like a bigger place in terms of reasonable places to live. I have been waiting for this. We may not be renewing out Bangkok lease next year!
Nervous_Dog
Sorry Dave, it doesn;t! Cute smile though! You'll be pleased there about three new PayTV platforms starting in this area, so maybe! Rick, will get to you later, but at 3000 month going on memory you get capped at 7 gig a month. If your downloading movies that wont last, if regular surfing it;s ok. DOH

Lag time is better than no time! WiMAX - not proven technology, how do you do VDSL in a village, cost of DSLAM too high, too reach rural and remote areas cost effictively Satellite is the only way to go, and iPSTAR is the most efficient. OOK - lets look at Korea, most REAL broadband to the home anywhare in the world AND one of the largest Satellite users. WiMAX VDSL are terms to through around, but getting content pushed forward to the DSLAMs, servers ect Satellite multicasting is the best way to go. What is killing 3G? Satellite! (Look at SK Telecom and TU Media, again, the ONLY place in the world with true multicasting to hadnheld deivces, phones PDA's etc.) DOG DSLAM prices are not high at all and absolutely the best and cheapest solution for rural internet access (currently). Wimax may prove itself as a technology to compete with DSL at some point but just now nothing can compete with DSL as port prices are sub $25. In Thailand the main problem is poor low performance core networks, alot of it based on wireless SDH technology.
