Not too bad from the pictures on the net. Someone has also mentioned Pornping Tower to me. I wonder how's the two compared to each other?

I stayed in the Porn Ping a few years ago and found it very decent for the price. Rooms are bright and clean, swimming pool is nice, and the hotel's disco is a BIG ++.

More recently I stayed in the Novotel (on the north side of the old city) and found it slightly better. Rates are also around 1100 baths.

Hey pete,

This is a real hard question! Several of the nicer hotels around 3 and 4 stars in Chiang Mai tend to be around 1600 to 2200. Now you can book the Imprial Mai ping at the Chiang Mai airport at the travel desk just outside the the glass departure area to the left a couple booths next to the avis rentals. This desk seems to offer some of the best deals around! Also the Duangtawan close to the Imperial Mai ping and night bizzare goes for around 1600 to 1900 both, either, right on or close to loy Kroh road!. Week rates are now around 12000 baht. Best prices seem to be at the front desk. Now either you have to hit the lower end hotels like Chantra court, green hotel or other guest friendly hotels and guest houses at around the 500 to 700 baht rate. Or hit these: Royal lana or Porn Ping!

Now in the 900 to 1200 only two hotels are both guest friendly and cheap with decent services and great location in Chiang Mai. Either the Royal Lana or the porn ping! Both are in your price range. The Porn ping can be had at 1000 baht and do not under any circumstances allow them to place you above hot shots on the wing side. Stay in the Tower as high as possible! Porn ping has Bubbles disco...after the flood I wonder how this looks but it should be up again by November! Good hotels in this range of 1000 to 1200 in Chiang Mai always lacks something but I'd say the porn Ping at 1000 is really hard to beat for location, price, people, Freelancers and services! They even give you an ABF...well something like nana ABF but it's free! If you can spring the extra 15 US for Imperial Mai Ping or Duangtawan...do it but if not the porn ping is the ticket!

Also, stay close to Loy Kroh road as it connects to the night Bizzare...you'll thank me for this later! Well, do this if you want night life and fun...

I would go for The Suriwong - same price and location as Royal Lanna and Pornping, and also guest friendly. Having stayed at all of them it's the best of the three, but get a superior room (I'm paying 1100 Baht in November.) The breakfast is not very good but as I don't partake it doesn't bother me.

Do book early if you are planning to be there over Loi Krathong, which is a full 3 days up in the north. Hotels tend to get fully booked up as many people flock to Chiangmai, and there will probably be a surcharge for a gala dinner a la Christmas and New Year.

So how far is it to the Night Market on walking? What about the river?

>Do book early if you are planning to be there over Loi Krathong

What's Loi Krathong?? Some kind of festivals up north? When exactly is that in Nov?

Finally, any good and reliable online agents where I can book these hotels?

Thanks.

I know it's 1100 but it's too far from any action one wants on Loy Kroh road... all the action is around the night bizzare. The gogo's, beer bars, and some discos, some karokes... Up their past Central you have some stuff in the night life but not like the area around the night Bizzare fron Mandalay club down loy Kroh road to pornping area. In that area you even have the better massage joints in Chiang Mai Suri-Thai and Pandora on some nights!

OP-

You can book all three most likely on Planet Holiday via the links section on www.bangkoktonight.com or off www.R24.com think the last one is wrong! As for Suriwong...I've never got quoted lower then 1600. It's location is spot on being at the corner of Loy kroh and the night bizzare next to a starbucks and a bistro! I personally don't like this hotel reminds me of the Ambassador hotel in Bangkok only much much smaller! This hotel feels tight, dusty and old like the ambassador feels to me!

Then for 1600 stay at the DaungTawan or the Imperial Mai ping.

1. The Night Bizzare area runs parrallel to the Ping River! The area many of us are saying to stay in is a fairly small 1/2 by 1/2 mile square! In this area stay at Porn Ping, Suriwong and Royal Lanna for 900 to 1200 baht! Also close by is the Duangtawan and Imperial Mai Ping both are almost within this 1/2 mile square and either on or just off Loy Kroh road!

2. This festival is celebrated for a week and the last day of the Festival is really big... It's when Thai gather together with their friends and family to light candles on boats and place them afloat in the pig river...something about new beginings or luck for the family... Very romantic and beautifull, however! Dates I believe are 14 to the 20th of November!

3. see above post!

Loi Krathong is a nationwide Thai festival. The date varies as it is held in November at the time of the full moon. For most of Thailand, and especially BKK, it tends to be restricted to a single day. Up in Chiangmai they make a bit more of it and it usually spins out over 3 days. This year, the key dates for Chiangmai are 14/15/16 November, but you are only likely to pay a premium for one of those days. Many Thais come up to Chiangmai for the festival so it is quite busy.

As for booking hotels, I have been using Chiangmai On Line for several years ( http://www.hotels.chiangmai-online.com/ ). They have proved very reliable and always pick me up at the airport (free) and run me into the hotel. I then pay them before taking the voucher up to the hotel desk.

My pricing on the Suriwong (1150 Baht for a superior room) was with Chiangmai On Line, and the price has held constant with them for the last 4 years. I think the excess I paid for Loi Krathong night last year was about 400 Baht. Whilst the basic rooms at the Suriwong (at 1000 Baht) are a little ordinary, the superior rooms are big, well-decorated, very light, and overlook the Night Bazaar. There were 3 of us staying and no mention of any extra charges plus loads of extra towels etc. Didn't think much of the hotel eating options but there are loads of good restaurants close by.

Good luck, may see you there in November.
