I am aware of its usage as 'onion' too. Not sure what the fuss is about asking for a coke, either: Mii Coke dai mai khrap? or Yaak duum Coke k- seems to work for me. You use "yaak" if it preceeds a verb, as in "yaak pai talat" or "I want to go to the market."
