Is that enough of a side benefit?

Usually the teaching load at a uni is small - 10 hours or so a week depending on contract etc. So there is the chance to get "private tuition" off your students or a 2nd job.

It's easy enough at Tommy Sod to pick up a few extra classes at from 900 to 1200 an hour and run your pay up to around 40 to 50 thousand. Still, there is no certainty of that and there may be no extra classes during the long term breaks.

BTW the Linguistics Dept has a better base pay either than the English Dept or English Language Institute! Big turn over in the Ling Dept though. People stay a year or two because they want to work in Thailand. Then they move on.

But those who think the private unies pay better are in for a surprise. They usually do pay better, but only by say 5,000 to 10,000 a month more. Plus the classes tend to be huge and the students on the thick side. (The exception might be ABAC. There the students are largely lazy but bright rich kids.)

Only really decent teaching pay is at the major international schools, such as Harrow, ISB and Ruamruedee.

I've heard tales of double salaries! e.g. Get hired in the US or UK and your base pay may be 90,000 or 100,000 baht a month plus housing and round trip travel allowance. Get hired locally -- with the identical qualifications -- and you may be offered around half that much, minus the housing and travel alowance. ::

But teaching here, for all the respect you will get from ordinary Thais, is ridiculously underpaid. Go look at www.acharn.com and check the salaries offered. There is an advert there now for an English trainer to set up all of the programmes, prepare the material and teach the courses for the entire Thai staff of the soon to open Millenium Hilton Hotel. The magnificent salary? 36,000 to 40,000 a month, depending on experience. Oh, yeah ... female applicants only. Wow, the Hilton is way up there when it comes to pay. ::
