The Linguistics Department of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, in Bangkok, Thailand, is seeking to fill a full-time instructor position, beginning within January 2006.

 

Interested candidates must have an MA or PhD degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or Language Teaching, in hand when lodging an application. Although preference is given to native speakers of English, those equally proficient in English are also encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to provide evidence of distinguished academic record and to have a serious commitment to teaching and research in their areas of interest.

 

The employment agreement is renewable on a yearly basis. The base monthly salary for this position is 22,248 baht plus a 8,000 baht housing allowance. The application deadline is 19 December 2005.

1. An application pack, which means a curriculum vitae and another letter describing your personal information, academic background and interests in more detail, as well as any contribution you think may benefit linguistic studies and research in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

 

2. Copies of all degree certificates, diplomas and certificates.

 

3. Copies of transcripts of tertiary grade results. For graduates of British, Australian or New Zealand institutions who are unable to produce MA or PhD grade results in alphabetic or numerical form, please send us an official proof of degree completion issued by your university's registry.

 

4. Two letters of reference. One of the referees must be your past instructor or thesis supervisor. Apart from stating their familiarity with your work and interests, they should also evaluate your personal character and ability to coordinate with colleagues and to work in a team.

 

5. Three passport photos. In the case of e-mailed applications, we only accept passport photos through the post.

 

6. Samples of published work. (if any)

Please note that regardless of the outcome of the application, all supporting documents will not be returned to you. A face-to-face or telephone interview may be necessary and will be arranged only at the applicant's expense.

 

The Department of Linguistics at Thammasat University is the oldest in Thailand and the only to offer a bachelor's degree in Linguistics as well as a master's degree which focuses on Linguistics for Communication and a PhD degree in Linguistics. The Department also publishes the Journal of Language and Linguistics, the only specialized linguistics publication of its type in Thailand. It provides a forum for publication of original articles in any area of language, linguistics and language teaching.

How is someone from an English speaking country meant to live in Bangkok on Bt.32,248 a month!! Who would want to?

So, they are after a PhD, evidence of publications and past work experience all for the princely sum of 32,000 baht per month. From which of course will be deducted tax and social security. Fucking pathetic. Uni pay scales here for the foreigners are a total outrage.

Hi josh,

Well, nobody is forced to take it. I guess they will get people who are either not very good, or those who look at it as a working holiday for a couple of years for the experience - and have the financial resources to subsidise their living costs.
