..
Here is an excellent eyewitness account of what happened. BuffHello (unsuprisingly) is stretching the truth a bit with his ascertation that plainclothes soldiers were "hunting" people in the sois. Per the eyewitness account, most damage was done by uniformed soldiers (the are pix at the link too) tho the plainclothes soldiers are mentioned, they seemed to have been ineffective. Both foreigners mentioned in the link were "wrong place wrong time" kinda things. One was a guy who worked for both ISB (teaching computers) and the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand (translating texts). He lived at Wat Bowonniwet Vihara (aka Wat Bowon) which was right in the thick of the problem. The other seemed to be a jogger that got caught up in the mess. Both were Kiwis. Flashermac
S Tsow told me he was sitting in a restaurant with Colin Pipprell when the coup troops arrived. He said they were not your usually happy go lucky farm boy conscript, but were clearly hard as nails pros. He and Colin decided it was time for them to head for home! asiafun
By chance based on your experience and intuition, would you have a guestimate timeframe that things could take a turn for the worse? I would hate for something like this to ruin my vacation in December.
Flashermac
I don't really see it happening. I HOPE the country has progressed beyond that stage by now. Still, one never knows with Thailand. It may be largely sound and fury just to get Mr T to act a bit less like Thailand belongs to him.
Guest
Word is the PM started the coup rumors himself, to take the spotlight off of the Sondhi controversy. I wouldn't put it past him. And his Cabinet members are such toadies that I cannot honestly imagine someone like the transport minister having heard about a coup and NOT reported every detail to Thaksin. Whereupon the coup plotters, even if alleged, would have been rounded up, strung upside down and had a rap tattoo beaten on the sole of their feet.
