Bird is quite a fella, I'm not sure of his exact age but I think he's in his early 50's and yes he is gay, looks nowhere near that old (yanhee?) Anyway I am not really a fan as he is a string singer but I did enjoy his fan ja and ma tami because he recorded them with jintara. If you have not seen the famous concert on DVD at the impact stadium from 1992 I recommend it, has a couple of other female singers, Nat and one I forget. IMO it's one of the best thai concerts ever recorded. Bird has been singing a very long time, one of his first releases was 'why you go to london' released in about 1972, so he's a real survivor and very popular with the ladies. He's very wealthy and has a home in Hawaii I believe, I think it was his grandfather who was Scots. Don't know where he was born for sure, but I think Bangkok. Has recorded in english too. I'm told he's a very nice guy, but never met him.

Nok is purely a luktung singer

She does do lam, but it's rather anaemic stuff: have a listen to the second clip here.

In early January, the Red Cross concerts will still be going on in some of the Isan provincial capitals; Siripon and Jin will be there.

Thats an interesting site I'll have a look, I still don't think you can call any of her songs morlam, but I don't think I have this CD. It's the old argument of luktung pryuk/morlam. I have never heard her sing morlam and I've seen her a few times. Red cross must have a lot of concerts in August they had two weeks of them at the old siam in china town with different singers everyday. Saw Yui Yatt Yerr, but as usual she looked uncomfortable and ill at ease in front of an audience, free concerts for fund raising.

Had a quick read, don't agre with some things esp on Jintara eg:

'Among her best-known solo songs are Sao Isan plat tin (Isan girl poor and far from home, album 9), which incorporates the typical themes of poverty, homesickness and an unfaithful lover, and Arlai World Trade (Mourning the World Trade Center, album Luk tung sa on 6'

This reads like somebody who has never heard her most popular songs and biggest hits, how many have heard of ari world trade centre? terrible song which is unpleasant to watch the video of, bad taste I think to have girls dancing around to this song, and one that as far as I know has not been performed publically or included in any greatest hits CD'

I would say among her best known songs are warn puen kean jod mai, namta sao uwarin, rak sa lai dog fai bann and tegmo jintara.

Just noticed he credits wikepedia:

Jintara Poonlarp or Poonlarb [snip] Poonlarp is her stage name; her real surname is Janlueang

Never heard this befoe I thought her real name was Thong Bai poonlap, wonder if they are right?

The morlam-luktung site is very good, far better than afana.org. Some things I don't agree with such as tai's 3rd CD being better than the others, or Siriporn taking over the mantle of Pumpuang (Sunaree surely) but other than that well informed. Still not sure about jins family name but the mrs lives in the same condo as one of her many relatives so she will check. The story about her studying at rajabaht for a degree in political science is not true, as far as I know. For one thing she'd never have the time and she told me she was not studying anything, I suggested she study English which made her laugh. Last time I saw you you were chatting up that barmy Apaporn in krungton cafe!
