Australian man faces questioning over alleged abuse of Cambodian boys

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - An Australian man was charged Friday with

sexually abusing and taking pornographic photos of Cambodian boys, a

prosecutor said.

Prosecutor Nget Sarath said Damien Walker "admitted to abusing the

victims," and faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail and a 30

million riel (US$7,230; euro6,024) fine.

Walker, 26, of Melbourne, declined to speak to reporters as he was

escorted by Cambodian police into a prosecutor's office at Phnom Penh

Municipal Court.

Walker was arrested Tuesday on a tip from a child rights group that

spent nearly two weeks investigating alleged sexual offenses involving

as many as seven boys between the ages of 10 and 14, said Keo Thea, a

municipal anti-trafficking police officer.

Police stopped Walker on a street in the capital, Phnom Penh, and

questioned him, searched his apartment and found photographs of nude

boys stored in his computer, Keo Thea said.

Keo Thea cited the boys as saying that Walker - a former English

teacher at a private Phnom Penh school - engaged in sex with them

several times and paid them US$5 (euro4) to US$10 (euro8) each time.

Debauchery, a Cambodian legal term for sex acts involving minors, is

punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The penalty for taking

pornographic pictures of minors is five years imprisonment and a fine

of up to 30 million riel (US$7,230; euro6,024), Nget Sarath said.

France-based child rights advocacy group Action Pour Les Enfants

(Action for Children) alerted police about Walker after its

investigators observed him frequently bringing boys into his Phnom Penh

apartment, said the group's director, Beatrice Magnier. She said the

group had investigated the man for two weeks.

Child rights advocates say Cambodia's lax law enforcement has made it a

destination for foreign pedophiles. However, police have recently

stepped up action against offenders.

This must be a mistake surely, everyone knows there is no such thing as child abuse in Cambodia, :: or indentured prostitiution, or many underaged girls on the game. I believe western gents only ever go there to visit Angkor Wat or to enjoy the view over the mekong :D

Are you implying, via cynicism, that most western gents go over there, in addition to visit Angkor Wat and to enjoy the view over the Mekong, for the purpose of fucking indentured prostitutes and underaged females? If so, I think you are quite wrong.
