Guest
I will be visiting Bangkok, Pattaya and some of the Islands in June/July. Should I bother with Malaria tablets? They appear to be very expensive. The nurse at the doctor surgery, has handed me a leaflet for DOXYCYCLINE tablets - 100mg - Only available on private perscription with a 14 day supply, costing £25. I'm going for two months, so that's £100!!! Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative? How much are anti-malaria tablets, in LOS and what brand should I ask for? Many thanks

paul101
same name, I think boots sell for 5 baht but I bought some in ubon for 2 baht, big red buggers, don't take on empty stomach. Seriously though not worth the bother unless maybe you are going to ko chang.
bibblies
Doxycycline's the generic name. You don't need any malaria tablets for Bangkok, Pattaya or any of the islands like Phuket, Samui, etc, anyway. Being bitten's another thing - it's irritating having those lumps (especially around the eye) so just chuck on some skin protection with Deet in it if you spend much time outdoors at night. Again, these are much cheaper and more readily available in Thailand than the UK.
Guest
Thanks fo the info. At only 5 baht per tablet, perhaps it's worth popping the pills anyway? As regards the skin protection, does it come in a lotion or spray?
bibblies
Once you get to Thailand, it comes in most things. Deodorants, etc.
