allistar
So, to ask the same question over (to the right person), and hopefully get an answer by 2012 (he goes 3 years between posts), how was jury duty or how did you get out of it? cavanami
Do the jury duty...it will be a very educational. I did jury duty some years ago in the USA. It wss good to see the judicial system in action (or lack of action). Nothing like what they show on TV or the movies!
Dexi
I did it a couple of years ago in the UK.Overall it was a good experience so much so that I would volunteer to do it again....2 weeks with nothing to do but sit and watch tv,free lunch provided and at the end all expenses paid including the money I could (theoretically)have earned if not on duty....
shygye
Very different in the USA. I have served on 2 State juries. In my State, you get $25 per day for expenses. No free food or watching tv. Plus that $25 is taxable income. I never want to be on another jury. There is a huge emotional cost when it is a murder trial. cavanami
I got free food in the USA while on jury duty...were you in W. Virginia or something???
Flashermac
Differs by state and even county. At home I think it's $55 a day - and you pay your own expenses. A problem with jury trials is that most intelligent people manage to find some reason to be excused from jury duty. The ones who are left tend to be thickies. cavanami
...you saying I'm a thickie....OK, that's correct, but only a little thick
Mike Goodtime
I have been called to jury duty a few times and got out of it every time. I always plead financial hardship because my company does not pay me for jury duty. The last time I told them I served my country in the military for six years, so get some citizen who has done zero service to the country. Just keep whining and they will let you out of jury duty. Also bring up jury nullification in the US courts and they will probably drop you like a hot potato. Judges hate jury nullification because it trumps their authority. Like all government programs, jury selection and service is all messed up.
