BKKfreak posted a humorous, but very accurate, reply. I tried that line of questioning once, in a bar in Hong Kong. The girls looked at me like I has three heads. (I only have two, but if I wear a large hat nobody notices). I was informed that school was far too expensive for people such as themselves, hobbies were for well-to-do people with time on their hands, etc.

The upshot is that these girls come from families too poor to send them to school, have few economic opportunities and, many times, are too lazy to do the unbelievably hard work of creating those opportunities. Many times a sad situation.

Personally, I try to never lie to a bg, to treat them with a modicum of respect and try not to compare notes about life in Thailand vs. life in the USA. I like the part about telling her all about your wonderful life but being too greedy to buy a lady drink!
