robaus
Try some of the hairy armpitted backpackers at the Youth Hostel! Who needs the tarts when you can savour the pleasure of my favourite malt Lagavulin, with that distinctive smokey peaty flavour. A very close second 2 miles down the road is Laphroiag. I have yet to sample the delights of the strongest of the lot Ardbeg ( a must do before I shuffle off this mortal coil) - the distillery was still mothballed when I visited in 1997. The_Munchmaster
Actually it reopened in 1997, perhaps shortly after you left. I recently opened a bottle of 25 yo Ardbeg, which I'd had for 18 months!, and it was superb. However at 105 quid it wasn't worth the cost of 2 1/2 bottles of the 17 yo. robaus
>>105 quid ... ouch! I'll look out for the 17 yr old at duty frees. Yes, there were rumours of it reopening when I was there in 97. For Sassenachs and other infidels such as myself, Islay is well worth a visit - it's a beautiful island with varied scenery and history and about 6 distilleries - but only 3 with that distinctive, smokey flavour. The neighbouring island Jura is fascinating too, where you can drive, then walk to the very cottage where George Orwell wrote 1984 ... if you can get past the Jura distillery that is! The_Munchmaster
Unfortunately due to limited supplies you're unlikely to find it in duty frees. 7 working distilleries and I'm going there in September. ::
