Bangkoktraveler
You might want to check e-bay. Lately they have been having a considerable amount of cell phones for sale that are unlocked. The bulk of them are refurbished but come with new packaging. I suspect a lot of the phones at MBK come thru this same route.
OCgringo
one thing to remember, USA GSM is not the same as Thai GSM , so you cannot get a cheap USA GSM phone , unlock it and use it in Thailand , You CAN buy one from Ebay-UK that will work, OC
Guy Himmaparn
The quad band GSM phones will work on any GSM system worldwide, but it really is easier & cheaper just to get one in BKK. I tried the eBay route and ended up returning the phone as the tolerances on the parts were so far off nothing fit together correctly... much prefer the experience of buying in LOS as well. elef
Sure but you can also use it in gsm-systems all over the world. A prepaid simcard however has a limited time depending on operator and how much money you put inside.
mogul
one thing to remember, USA GSM is not the same as Thai GSM , so you cannot get a cheap USA GSM phone , unlock it and use it in Thailand , You CAN buy one from Ebay-UK that will work, OC both cingular and t-mobile in the us are GSM 1900MHz; in LOS, dtac and true are GSM 1800, 1-2-call is 900. so you would need to get, at a minimum, a tri-band phone (900, 1800, 1900). Guy Himmaparn
if i buy a phone in thailand....can i use it everytime i visit there from year to year? Yes, just buy a new SIM card each visit. If you save your contacts to the phone, not the SIM card, then you can simply notify them of your new number each trip.

Some of them may, but the one I purchased on eBay seemed to be manufactured using worn-out tooling as the parts were new but didn't fit together properly... never came across that problem with any of the phones at MBK.
