rookie
[quote=exit2dos.....In other words: I thought it was multiple entry. With an OA "Retirement Visa" you _must_ obtain a re-entry permit (1000-Bt)prior to every time you leave Thailand. IF you fail to do so and upon re-entering Thailand your OA visa will be _cancelled_ you'll get an on-arrival entry visa. Hence you'd need to again go through the hassle of getting another OA 'retirement visa'. Alternately...you can get a multi-entry visa with your OA visa. It costs 3800-Bt. The multi-entry visa is valid only until your current OA expires and needs renewal. So if you obtain the multi-entry at the same time you are re-newing (or obtaining your initial OA retirement visa), the multi will be valid for a year the OA is valid, If you get the multi-entry other than when renewing your OA, the multi is valid only for the remaining time on your OA retirement visa. Flashermac
Oh, what fun a colleague had a few years ago, when he took his new Thai wife on holiday ... and forgot to get a re-entry permit! He had to enter the country on a tourist visa, get the paperwork to get a 90-day non-immigrant visa in Laos, come back and get a new WP and then extend his visa to a full year. That was a lesson he'll never forget.
New Petchburi Pete
While the original retirement visa may well have been a multiple-entry visa, the yearly extensions do not come as such. Thus, as pointed out, re-entry permits must be obtained, otherwise the visa extension is nullified. Re-entry permits can be obtained on a single basis, or for a certain fee (3800. Bt. ?) a multiple re-entry permit can be obtained for the visa extension.
exit2dos
I liked the old way of the visa runs. But things have changed and the O A is my best option. It's more red tape, but it will be better for me in the long run. Thanks for the details, Gentlemen.
New Petchburi Pete
Don't worry, the visa renewals are easy. In fact, the yearly medical exams/certificates are longer a requirement.
Flashermac
Seems now they no longer care if you have a horrible communicable disease, as long as you have money.
