Gangs violence in Rio

Apparently 20% of the 600 favelas in Rio are now controlled by private militias. Some local residents pay around 10 Reals (4 â?¬) per month to keep the drug gangs out of the favelas

Hi Prosal,

As I've said before, a lot of this is the legacy of the Spanish - with the possible exception of Chile, I cant think of a former Spanish colony where the poverty-sticken dont outnumber the rest ('those who arent forced to live in the Barrio/Ghetto/Favela') by more than 100 to 1. That is a formula for the rise of the drug lord etc. The Spanish raped continents and simply moved on when things got too hot. At least the Brits left us with a portrait of the Queen and the recipe for plum pudding. :smirk:

(OK, these are wild generalisations, but other than roads, our parliamentary system, the rule of law, a prosperous rural sector (in 1901) and the English language, what have the Romans done for us anyway ?)

The movie "City of God" was really good, based upon real events that occured during the 70s and 80s, but in reality the Cidade de Deus can't be considered as a favela.

It was a housing project started in the sixties to house people who were being forcibly removed from a favela near Lagoa (where all those high priced condos are today). It quickly overflowed its limits and is now *something* like a favela, but not an "official" favela as its land is not squatted.

Also violence doesn't occur that often in Cidade de Deus, unlike the others favelas of the Zona Sul like Morro da Dona Marta, Chapeu Mangueira, Vidigal, Rocinha, Pavao-Pavaozinho, Cantagalo, to name a few, where there's shootouts and murders everyday.

If you read portugese, here is a day-by-day reporting about violence in Rio de Janeiro. Distressing.

Many years ago a mate and I were 'mongering in the Torres Strait's Islands and he got pissed off because he couldn't understand what the girls were saying when they talked to each other.

So he started talking to me in pig-Latin and one of the dusky island maidens actually understood it... Sheet!
