A good 30-45 min moto ride to phuket town or patong, and 45 minutes to an hour from Rawaii a place suggested earlier. This is an area that is largely undeveloped when I was there, not many services, some small lodgings, the odd karaoke bar, but is being developed exclusively high scale. Laguna Phuket resorts is right around the corner. I would jump at a chance to get a small house out in the stix of Phuket. There are some seafood restaurants above the marina that are great. North Phuket Town would be your best bet for convenience of services and short commute. There is a great little shortcut over to Patong from North Phuket Town for sanuk outings, and you will be already located on the long stretch up to Yamu. Check out Thanon Yarowat as it leaves Phuket Town heading north. Once you are out of town you can find your own small house for 8-12k baht unfurnished. There is a university in the area and the accompanying sea of tight white blouses and blck miniskirts. These are 2003 prices [sorry if they are inaccurate].
