Thaksinomics

Whatever Thaksinomics is or was, it changed over time to describe the policies Thaksin's government was pursuing at any one time.

He flipped flopped (changed direction) on a number of issues, which the articles describes as different "stages" (e.g., in stage 1, we are for X, but in stage 2, we are against X). Thaksinomics was essentially an opportunisitic rationalization for any policy Thaksinâ??s pursued at ay point in time rather than a coherent policy.

To a very large extent, Thaksin benefitted from the reforms (limited though they were) implimented by Chuan II.

Incidentally, I don't think much of the government's current policies. Before we saw the economy here drop dramatically, someone on this board described BOT's policies as "crafty" - what a hoot. And how wrong that turned out to be.

But the new Minister of Finance, before he was appointed to office at least, favored more rational and open market oriented policies. And the only major party left, the Democrats, have put forth reasonable pro-investment policies. For example, they are on record as being opposed to the BOT's capital tax and the proposed changes to the Foreign Business Act. There's hope.
