It is a cult and a dangerously insane one to boot...so good on Germany for taking a stand against the nutters... Or 2. Germany is being a tad nationalistic and seeking to avoid looking at its very shit history ala the recent Japanese machinations...which would worry me. There's enough denial of reality about as it is lately. I hope it's the former. I'd say the reaction is because Cruse plans to portray one of Germany's relatively few genuine heroes from WWII. I can understand that. If Cruse wanted to play say Himmler or Hitler, there would be no problem, since Scientology is seen as another whacko ideology. The Scientologists have been fighting the German government in court for some years, insisting they really are a church - not just a very profitable business that attracts oddballs.
