David99UK
I dunno about the US supporting Castro before he came to power but given the US supported Pol Pot after he left power - I guess nothing is impossible. In any event I recall reading (probably in Pravda :smirk: ) that Castro started off more as a socialist to the extent that he did not think it right that the Cubans were treated like colonials and kept in poverty as a matter of policy. He DID want to be freinds with the USA, and indeed the old soviet union was second choice to whom he was forced to turn to simply for economic reasons.......of course that came with the price of having to at least make the right noises....whatever the USA may say about castro, few thought he was an idiot.....out of a choice between being on freindly terms with the USA on it's door step or a distant power - only an idiot would choose the second out of choice, instead of neccesity. The Cuban stuff has been kept alive purely for US domestic reasons (a couple of million cubans in a swing state ARE a good reason for keeping the issue and problem alive - and they are just to dumb to realise they are being led by the nose).........If America had TRADED with Cuba then Castro would have been long gone by now......it's never too late to stop being dumb. If I was a Cuban I might well want to go to the USA for economic reasons, but I sure as sh#t would not want to go to the example of what Cuba would have become under America.......Haiti. And I would thank Castro every day for not condeming me to that.
OCgringo
ummm Haiti was French ! but none of the other "islands" have done very much for themselves either, There are many USA Cubans that would like to open up trade , but they are scared to say anything because the USA Cuban thugs will get them , I think this will all end when Fidel dies, Raul is playing the tough guy now , but can he really hold onto power when Fidel is dead, The Cubans love is for Fidel, thats why that take the shit they are given , it will not continue when he is gone , the government / army can only do so much oif the people rise up.... time will tell OC
trooper
I seriously hope it will not end up the US taking hold of Cuban resources, destroying the culture and turning the country back to the playground of rich americans like it was pre Castro. David99UK
ummm Haiti was French !OC Yeah, but they threw of the "yoke of oppression" a long time ago (one of the first?)......Papa Doc and Baby Doc were supported by the USA, if you were anti-communist screwing your own people into the ground was acceptable. None of the other "islands" have done very much for themselves either, But none of them had a Castro........ Life after Castro? Hopefully the Cubans AND the Americans will seize the opportunity to claim victory and normalise the ties between each country......whilst for many (here as well) turning cuba back into a Western playground and vassel state would be great, it probably is not in the best interests of Cubans long term.
