Gold Medal for Thailand!

Premwadee wins 1st gold for Thailand

(BangkokPost.com) - Weightlifter Premwadee Charoenrattanatharakul, or Nong Kay, has won the first gold medal for Thailand at the Beijing Olympic Games on Saturday afternoon.

Nong Kay, a local 24-year-old athlete from Nakhon Sawan province, competed in the 53kg class. She successfully broke the Olympic record after lifting 126 kg in the second attempt in clean and jerk, but could not clear 130 kg in the third and final attempt.

Other main contenders were competing for the silver medal, as Nong Kay was able to outmuscle them in the end. The silver and bronze medals went to South Korea and Belarus respectively.

Two other weightlifters in the womenâ??s 48kg class, Pensiri Laosirikul and Premsiri Bunpitak, who were tipped to win Thailandâ??s first medal, failed to do so on Friday.
