A day at the races: students take a punt

A teacher who took students to a racetrack to show them the maths behind betting has been accused of leading them astray, but a maths expert says it will make them better citizens.

Jim Dooley, a maths teacher at Mt St Michael's College in Brisbane, reportedly took the students - aged 16 and 17 - to Doomben racetrack and gave them an imaginary $50 to spend on bets.

The excursion was part of a mathematics assignment on "risk and return", Mr Dooley told News Ltd.

But the Australian Family Association's Queensland president, Mark Holzworth, said the exercise served only to introduce the children to the "vices" of gambling.

I love unorthodox teaching. When in high school we were doing drug education. Our science teacher...who incedently used to go through two or three BEX powders a lesson did a field trip to the local pub one night to find out what drugs he could buy and how much.
