Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has urged the members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to stop using the U.S. dollar in their trade exchanges.

The economic policies of the major powers are the main reasons for the global economic meltdown, Ahmadinejad said here on Tuesday at the third meeting of economic affairs and finance ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization.

â??They have imposed a unified monetary system on the global economy and have stolen the assets of nations.â?Â

But the signs of the definitive failure of the dominant political and economic systems are evident, he added.

â??The strategic status, the human resources, and the enormous talent of the members of ECO are invaluable assets. (We) can depend on them in pursuing economic and monetary objectives.â?Â

The president also pointed out that the current economic crisis is just one of the many challenges nations have faced over the past few decades.

â??All of these problems indicate that theâ?¦ harm of the current economic and monetary crises, which may lead to social and political crises, is threatening nations, and especially nations whose economies are more dependent upon the global economic system of capitalism.â?Â

ECO takes step toward establishment of free trade zone

Economic Cooperation Organization Secretary General Khorshid Anvar said here on Tuesday that many of the current tariffs will be reduced in the next eight years through the implementation of the ECO Trade Agreement, which is a step toward the establishment of an ECO free trade zone.

The objectives of the agreement are to foster, support, and boost regional trade based on common principles and to reinforce economic cooperation among ECO members.

The plan to establish the ECO Reinsurance Company is in its â??final stageâ?Â, Anvar said at the ECO conference in Tehran.

ECO says the company is being established to supplement the existing reinsurance services in the region, promote the growth of national underwriting and retention capacities, minimize the outflow of foreign exchange from the region, and support economic development in the region.

â??The company will seek to improve the ECO member statesâ?? economic situation,â? Anvar added.

Unfortunately, the ECO member states have not properly made use of the great opportunities for cooperation, he pointed out.

In 2007, ECO members had an average economic growth rate of 5.6 percent, their world trade exchanges stood at $512 billion, and they had $33 billion worth of trade exchanges with each other, he said.

The ten members of the Economic Cooperation Organization are Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan
