You know you've got it bad when...

So, there I was, in traffic, thinking about grabbing lunch, and I remembered there was a small Thai restaurant near where I was that I hadn't checked out yet.

I go in. Nice furnishings for basic strip-mall restaurant, very dark, almost deserted. The lady at the desk is Oriental, but I didn't immediately place her. I look at the menu, order Tam Yun Goong (I think) and chicken Pad Thai. She assures me that they have Thai iced tea, writes down Iced Tea.

I sit down to wait for my food.

I start noticing things. The music. The general decor. The peaceful attitude. The portrait of His Majesty.

I hear the lady on the phone, speaking in Thai.

My food comes. I say "Kob khun khrap", and she immediately, without a moment's hesitation, answers "Kob khun ka", with perfect pronunciation (unlike mine).

It was more food than I could handle, and it was good.

And I walked out of there HOMESICK for Bangkok...

You know you've got it bad when one simple Saturday afternoon casual meal, in a place that is Thai in spirit, hits you like that.

I don't know about that. The place is outside my usual combat radius, but I had an excuse to be headed over that way yesterday.

I will say this: I liked it a LOT better than I like the local Hispanic-staffed serious "Thai" restaurant. Say "Kob khun khrap" to them and you get a blank look...

sure the restaurant seemed second to none.

nothing worse than thai restaurants in the west without any hint of thai people on site

above all if there's 'local-thais' as customers the food may even be excellent (else local-thais wouldn't bother and be cooking at home LOL) ;)

Anyone ever see "chicken pad thai" in Tland?

Over a 10 year period, i've never seen it anywhere in tland.

I've only seen it in USA, and in the "non-authentic" thai restaurants, which is majority...

(you know, the ones that make .....kapow.....

with "lots of sauce"...and its NOT chili sauce... and with red and green bell peppers", but no thai chili peppers, etc.

Or, green curry without the thai eggplants, but

instead use bell peppers....

I won't eat in those places (which is the majority

of thai restaurants in the usa). And most thai places in usa never have any thai customers at all, and the americans in there often can be found using chopsticks for dishes that thais would never use chopsticks for...I avoid most usa thai restaurants....

Anyway, as far "chicken pad thai" in Tland,

i'm sure you can order it (or "pork pad thai", but you'll never see it on a menu like that, and you'll never see thais eating it.

(i've had seafood pad thai, which is the one main

variation from the usual shrimp (goong) pad thai

or the usual vege pad thai.

Had a similar experience visiting a Thai restaurant near my home here in Farangland. My waitress was a cute young Thai girl. She was as homesick for Thailand as me and we talked about all the things we missed. At the end of the meal she passed me her phone number because I mentioned I missed Thai massage. She said she could do for me. That Thai girl attitude is what I really miss.
