allistar
The author of Angela's Ashes and two other books concerning his life in America has died at age 78. His book about growing up impoverished in 1930-1940's Limerack won the Pulitzer Prize and gave him a second life as an author after retiring from teaching. It certainly wasn't a pretty picture that he painted of Irish life but dealt with the dark side of Ireland and forshadowed many of the alegations made against the Catholic church in Ireland. Steve
Ashamed to say I didn't discover his writings till after the movie Angela's Ashes came and I loved the movie which prompted me to read some of his work. That and a friend from Dublin who told me some things about him as well. I heard of him prior but didn't read anything by him and was not on any of lit reading lists in college. Good writer who will be missed.
ThaiHome
Read Angela’s Ashes right after it was published. Great book, but one of those you are so glad it’s over because you almost can’t stand to hear anymore misery. TH
