AV-Comparatives Of course these programs are sold for money. Fortunately Avira and AVG offer free versions as well.
unit731
I used Avast and didn't like the interface. I now use free AVG on two. And a paid Norton on another. The only one that had problems was Norton. And that was some download update that screwed up computer. Had to uninstall and reinstall Norton. cavanami
AVG, free and works OK. I had Norton, but too slow.
elroy
I've used AVG free an it worked well until one day when it recognized a virus but could not eliminate it. I switched to Avast and have been virus free for a couple of years. I agree that the interface is a bit user-unfriendly but 97% of the time it's running in the background so there isn't much interaction. I recommend it, and its free.
