zzzz
If the EXT HD shows up on another PC, it could be a corrupted cmos.
farangman
Absolutely wierd! I switched on the notebook today to follow directions posted earlier and the drive is showing again without me doing anything! This was despite me rebooting numerous times yesterday with no luck! Thanks anyway to everybody for your replies!

BaronTT
Glad that it worked for you. I should have mentioned to try that as well, as that usually (but not always) fixes the problem for me. That's why I generally use the procedure I outlined as it works 100%, is quick, and doesn't require re-booting. My wife's el-cheapo SVOA notebook couldn't recognize a thumb drive yesterday, and I tried all of the different USB ports and it didn't work in any of them. I then went through the procedure I listed, and then the thumb drive was recognized. So far my success rate has been 100% so keep it in mind for next time.
