America guaranteed their loans when they needed massive amounts from the IMF in the '70s. I've heard part of our war effort to help the Brits in the Falklands was back channel threats not to back any more loans for them, amongst other things (such as restocking British ships in the ocean). I've read about investment houses making financial bets on BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China). Anyway these are supposed to be the best economies in terms of growth.
