Guest
I've noticed monks at pantip plaza, MBK, on airplanes, and with cell phones. This strikes me as a bit more materialistic than I expected. What is this all about?

Old Hippie
I kid you not, I was treking in Nepal, and at around 13,000ft in the Himalayas, very remote , behind Tengbouche Monestary, I saw a Tibeten monk with a cell phone! Cracked me up. As for the satellite dish etc, I suppose it is for better communications...
Guest
There is a Bhutanese film (yes, I said Bhutanese, and rather recent, also) called "The Cup." This makes me think of that. Watch it if you can. It appeared at the Sundance and Toronto festivals, received good reviews, and IS highly entertaining. I've seen it out on video or DVD (or both?). Guest
> As I understand it, monks may use these conveniences to do Buddha's work more efficiently but not for their own sake. He he...then from what I've seen at Pantip Plaza, Buddha must be up for some PC gaming once in awhile and an occasional "sexy movie!"
jetlag
Obviously I'm not the only one who's noticed this phenomenon. So much so that I've taken to calling the place Wat Pantip (makes the girlfriend giggle at least). I once followed a small group of monks around, to see if they got the "Hey you want sexy movie" line too. Turns out they didn't. Nice to know that thailand's porn merchants still act with some decorum. Still, times change, nothing wrong with moving with them. Last time at Wat Arun, I actively sought out the only monk using a cell phone for a blessing. I figured here's a guy that understands my needs. Who cares if the rains come and I have a bountiful harvest? I need good reception damn it! Jetlag
Guest
Come to think of it... does Pope Paul use a cell phone? Has anyone seen a high profile Christian leader with one? Is this prohibited by the Vatican?
