How to learn Thai?

What is the best way to learn Thai? I spend 4 months a year at 2/4/2/4 in LOS. Would anyone suggest a tutor/school that could guide me? How long does it take to beome fluent in Thai? What style is used to teach Thai? Any information would be helpful. What is the cost?

hi, i personally taught myself. i would suggest getting some books when you're here and learning the script. when you can read and write thai learning new vocabulary and pronunciation will be so much easier. the only way to become fluent i guess is to live and work here for long time (something i'm still trying for!!). you can study thai script when you go back home and practise your conversation when you're here.

good luck

Hi,

Not sure where you live, which is good, because I am liable to break in when you aren't home, drink all your booze and steal your porn, but as for learning Thai, I use every means necessary, Rossetta Stone, Courage software, and a Diplomat cassette set. I also attend classes every Sunday at a local Thai Buddist Temple here in California. If you have access to any of these, it will help. You can also try a school in Thailand when you are there. AUA or another recomended school. As for becomming fluent, it all depends on you. For what it is worth, I grew up in California mainly, learning English and Spanish, I lived and taught in Mexico for 6 months...yet, I don't consider myself fluent. As for Thai, I can understand it a bit better than I speak it (not saying much at all really) but frequently get caught up on the tones. Send me a PM for further information on where to obtain Rosetta stone and Courage software...
