Spam-killer

Hi,

For those of you who, like me, get shitloads of spam, you might want to have a look at http://www.mailwasher.net.

It is an email pre-processor, allowing you to decide whether you wish to download email from the server, delete it, or even bounce it!

Especially this bouncing is really interesting since it will make the spammers believe that your address is invalid, and you may be taken of the lists.

I have only installed it yesterday, but it is very easy to use and I recommend it to everybody that hates spam.

Hello,

Unfortunatly bouncing spam does not work, since spammers forge the From: or Reply-To: headers to which these bounces are send, making some innocent person or company receive thousands of these mails.

The best way to fight abuse like spam is by complaining to the sender's internet-provider, for instance by using spamcop (http://spamcop.net)

Greetings,

Hi Wouter,

It's not always the case that spammers forge their headers and return paths. Just recently I had dozens of spams arriving at domain emails I own all addressed to webmaster@domain.com with the message 'test' and each email sent twice. This was fairly clearly someone veryfying their spam database. The tool above would have been ideal for getting off the list.

But you are correct that Spam Cop is good for resolving forged paths and shutting spammers down.

Hello Sanuk,

IMO another good way to get rid of spammers is to find the origin IP address in the email header info. Then do a whois lookup to see who is the host, usually the whois will provide a contact email and some some administrator email. Forward the spam email to these addresses telling them it's illegal, unwanted and ask them to take appropriate actions against the sender. Works for me.

A couple of whois links:

Best regards,

I agree with you, that it is often the case. Since most spam mails advertise a site, do a whois on the site and get the host that way. Anyway, I do belive the host of the IP in the header would like to know about it, even they might not be the real origin.

The one company that can come up with a full anti-spam program will be the next killer app. I wonder why no big corp like Microsoft / IBM / Norton is coming up with this idea?
