Cancel speech, Thaksin told

PARIS - FRANCE said on Tuesday it had persuaded Thailand's ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to abandon a speech in Paris on the Thai political crisis, but the event's organisers insisted it would go ahead.

'Thaksin Shinawatra assured us he would do what was asked,' foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters, referring to French officials' demands last week that he should not speak in Paris on May 31 as planned.

Mr Valero said the address to journalists, organised by a little-known think tank called the Centre of Political and Foreign Affairs, 'was no longer planned' and Thaksin 'told us he would not come back' to France.

But the head of the group of organising the speech, Fabien Baussart, told AFP: 'This event is still scheduled and it will take place whether the foreign ministry wants it to or not.'

France had earlier asked Thaksin to refrain from speaking in public during his private visit to France because of the tense situation in Thailand, where political instability has boiled over into deadly street violence. Mr Valero said France was not currently bound by the warrant. After Thursday's statements, the organisers of the speaking event said [color:red]Thaksin had temporarily left Paris for London.[/color] -- AFP

really seems stupid for them to say he could get the death penalty when many countrys will not extradite him with that threat

Actually, I was thinking the same.

I know, Canada, is one. What the US States do, is sign a waiver, that his penalty will be limited to life, with no chance of parole in prison.

I thought GB froze his assets and revoked his VISA banning him to enter the kingdom. :dunno:

According to the french official Thaksin said he won't return to France but the event organizers say that he left Paris TEMPORARILY for London. Which one is true?

bet his fat head makes a great target

Are you suggesting, that maybe a board member, can solve a huge problem, for Thailand ?

Ya, I thought England, told him not to come back, as well. Maybe just a smoke screen, to hide his real destination. Gotta believe Interpol, will know however.

Also, I was thinking, that the World Court, could take the case, not sure of that? Not sure how that works?

Thailand has signed but not ratifed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Attempts were made in late 2006 to have Thailand ratify the treaty in order to bring Thaksin before the world courts for the 2003 extrajudicial killings of the alleged drug dealers. I don't think there has been any further movement.

I'll be very surprised if the World Court dives into the murky world of Thai politics, which is what this is. Milosevich (war crimes) was straightforward in some ways but even that didn't sit well with many Serbs. Imagine what the Redshirts will think if Mr. T shows up in the Hague. The guy from Sudan was an easy target and he has ignored the ruling.
