South African police have rescued 21 Thai women believed to be human trafficking victims from an alleged brothel, a spokesman said on Sunday.

"We suspect that they may be victims of human trafficking," said Paul Ramaloko, spokesman for the Hawks specialised crime-fighting unit.

"We really couldn't establish whether they are victims of trafficking or not, so what we have done is we have removed them to a place of safety and then we are just going to conduct some interviews with them."

Police acted on a tip-off early Saturday morning that the women, who range from 23 to 27 years old, had been trafficked and were being sexually exploited in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, he said.

The women had all been in South Africa for less than a month.

A South African woman was arrested for operating an illegal brothel.

The Thai women's passports were recovered alongside cash and a small amount of heroin, said Ramoloko.

South Africa has beefed up anti-trafficking measures, including proposing its first direct legislation, and has set up regional police coordinators and task teams ahead of the football World Cup which starts on June 11.

Read it this morning but the opinio of my SA friend is they were probably not 'forced' to work there but rather came to grab opportunities....

like many other prostitutes who are attracted by the world cup..

But SA is damn dangerous for little Thai women -> as rape seems to be the national pass time (and HIV is far quite prevalent)

1. I know it will happen, but how many OS football fans would be leaving home now and thinking 'Wow, I cant wait to have sex with s hooker in SA - I hear the HIV stats are way overstated !'

2. Despite the claims re the rate of infection among the general population, Cambo still has the worst reported rate of HIV infection among working girls : in both countries, the percentage who service foreigners would be tiny compared to the local-only trade.

I'd still prefer to take my chances on the streets of PP at night than Jo'burg or Capetown, and the Cup organisers will be steeling themselves for the first report of a foreign fan being killed - I have little doubt that it will happen.
