Six Thai women believed to be trapped under the debris of a six-storey building in quake-struck Christchurch in New Zealand might still be alive, the Foreign Affairs Ministry says.

Thai ambassador to New Zealand Noppadon Theppitak said yesterday witnesses saw the women walking into the building shortly before a major earthquake struck the city on Tuesday.

Another Thai woman identified only as Dissaraporn (surname not disclosed), who is a friend of the six, was also buried under the rubble but was rescued.

Ms Dissaraporn confirmed her friends were trapped inside but still alive.

A ministry source said the Thai embassy in New Zealand had contacted local police and hospital staff to help search for the six women.

The source said the ministry hoped the Thais were still alive and could be among a group of about 100 people who have been rescued from the building.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry would monitor the situation closely until it was informed of the fate of the women.

The Thais thought to be buried under the debris are Thanida Intarawarangkul, Haruataya Luangsurapeesakul, Jittra Waitayatadapong, Siripan Wongboonngarm, Wanpen Pree-klang and Pimporn Liang-chuea.
