Bank of Thailand assistant governor Sorasit Suntornkes denied that he commented on the disappearance of about 10 billion baht from circulation ahead of the general election.

Mr Sorasit insisted on Tuesday that he did not make any public comment on this topic and did not give out any figures to reporters either.

It seemed reporters had been speculating, he said.

The original story was reported by Thai-language news outlets.

About 10 billion baht in cash has disappeared from circulation ahead of the July 3 general election, Bank of Thailand assistant governor Sorasit Suntornkes said on Tuesday afternoon.

"About 10 billion baht cash in total was withdrawn from various banks in nearly all regions of the country, but it was not spent in the system.

"The cause of the money's disappearance is being checked," Mr Sorasit said.

He added that it was suspected the money was being held to buy illegal drugs by drug rings or, possibly, for vote buying by politicians in the coming election.
