The red shirts stepped up the pressure yesterday to secure detained core leader Jatuporn Prompan's MP status.

Natthawut Saikua, red shirt leader turned Pheu Thai MP-elect, yesterday asked the Election Commission (EC) to issue a document certifying that Mr Jatuporn had not been disqualified for a party-list MP post and that he was still fit for the position.

Mr Natthawut said he wanted Mr Jatuporn's lawyer to use the document as part of a bail request.

However, Charoon Srisuksai, deputy director of the EC's Legal and Criminal Office, said his department could not issue such a document at the moment as the EC had not yet reviewed the qualification of each MP-elect.

Election commissioner Prapun Naigowit said the EC would review Mr Jatuporn's qualifications on Tuesday, along with 95% of all other MPs-elect.

Around 50 might not be certified as election-related complaints have been filed against them. However, the process must be completed before the lower house convenes or within 30 days after the general election, said Mr Prapun.

Also yesterday, a group of representatives from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship turned up at the Criminal Court calling for the release of Mr Jatuporn, Pheu Thai's No.8 party-list MP-elect.

UDD spokesman Worawut Vichaidith said his group had petitioned the Criminal Court after Tul Sitthisomwong, leader of the Civil Network Against Thaksin's Corruption Pardon, this week asked the EC to check whether Mr Jatuporn is qualified to be a party-list MP.

Mr Jatuporn yesterday attended a Criminal Court hearing in a defamation case he filed against Watchara Phetthong, a Democrat Party MP-elect.

He and Mr Watchara later told the judge they wanted to settle the dispute out of court.

The judge set July 21 as the date for settlement. If both parties cannot reach an agreement then, the court will resume its hearings on the dispute.
